LOS ANGELES — Asher HaVon won "The Voice" on Tuesday as three of the reality show's four coaches also prepared to take their final bows.
The 31-year-old soul and R&B singer from Selma, Alabama, was moved to tears when his victory was announced during the second half of the two-night season finale. The finale's voice-over explained that HaVon hadn't sung in two and a half years before he auditioned with Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" but he left with a $100,000 cash prize and a record deal with Republic Records.

- By SAMYA KULLAB - Associated Press
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russia is preparing to intensify its offensive along Ukraine’s northern border as the death toll rose to 14 in an aerial bomb attack on a large construction supplies store in the city of Kharkiv. The Kharkiv governor says the bombing on Saturday afternoon also left 43 injured and 16 missing. In a video statement from Kharkiv, Zelenskyy said Sunday that Russia is preparing offensive actions northwest of Ukraine’s second largest city. Moscow’s troops have in recent weeks captured villages in the Kharkiv area as part of a broad push.

Aid group says over 100 people killed in 2 weeks of fighting in a Sudanese city
- BY SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press
An international aid group says more than two weeks of fighting between Sudan’s military and a notorious paramilitary group over a major city in the western Darfur region killed at least 123 people. It said Sunday that the fighting in el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur province, also wounded more than 930 people. El-Fasher has become the center of the conflict between the military and the Rapid Support Forces. The city is the last stronghold that is still held by the military in the sprawling Darfur region. Sudan’s conflict began in April last year when soaring tensions between the leaders of the military and the RSF exploded into open fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere in the country.

The 2024 French Open has started and there is now a retractable roof atop Court Suzanne Lenglen
- AP
The 2024 French Open is underway at Roland Garros. Play in the first round has started on Sunday after a ceremony to inaugurate the new retractable roof above Court Suzanne Lenglen. There is no rain in the forecast for Day 1, so that might be the only use of the movable cover atop the second-largest stadium at the tournament facility. The main arena, Court Philippe Chatrier, has had its retractable roof since the 2020 tournament. Among the players scheduled to play Sunday are four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and two-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz.

Yemen’s Houthis freed over 100 war prisoners, the Red Cross says
- By SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press
The International Committee of the Red Cross says the Houthis rebels in Yemen have released more than 100 war prisoners linked to the country’s long-running conflict. It says release took place Sunday morning in the Houthi-held capital of Sanaa. The unilateral release came more than a year after Yemen’s warring sides freed more than 800 prisoners in a major exchange in the country in April last year. Thousands of people are still believed to be held as prisoners of war since the conflict erupted in 2014.

Sunak’s plan to make 18-year-olds do national service grabs attention on UK election trail
- By JILL LAWLESS - Associated Press
All 18-year-olds in Britain will have to perform a year of mandatory military or civilian national service if the governing Conservative Party wins the July 4 national election. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged to bring back a form of national service for the first time since 1960. Under the plan, a small minority of 18-year-olds would spend 12 months in the military. The rest would spend one weekend a month working for charities, community groups or public organizations. It was unclear how it would be made mandatory. Sunak is seeking to energize his election campaign after a faltering start. The opposition Labour Party dismissed the plan as a gimmick. Polls currently put Labour well ahead of the Conservatives.

Aid trucks begin entering Gaza under agreement with Egypt to bypass Rafah
- By WAFAA SHURAFA and SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press
Aid trucks have begun entering Gaza from southern Israel through a new agreement to bypass the Rafah crossing with Egypt after Israeli forces seized the Palestinian side of it earlier this month. Egypt refuses to reopen its side of the Rafah crossing until control of the Gaza side is handed back to Palestinians. But under U.S. and Israeli pressure it agreed to divert traffic through Israel’s Kerem Shalom crossing, Gaza’s main cargo terminal. That crossing has been largely inaccessible because of fighting linked to Israel’s offensive in Rafah. Israel says it has allowed hundreds of trucks to enter, but United Nations agencies say it is usually too dangerous to retrieve the aid on the other side.

Indianapolis 500: A double bid, a whiff of scandal and the fear of rain as race day arrives
- By JENNA FRYER - AP Auto Racing Writer
Team Penske's Josef Newgarden is the defending winner of the Indianapolis 500 and he is a favorite for Sunday's race. Race day has arrived and there are concerns rain could delay or even postpone the race. That would disrupt Kyle Larson's day. He is trying to become just the fifth driver to compete in both the Indy 500 and NASCAR's longest race, the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina, on the same day. Newgarden and two Penske teammates will be on the front row when the race begins.
