What is the maximum weight for a single axle trailer? ›

Federally mandated maximum weights for the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways: 80,000 lbs gross vehicle weight. 20,000 lbs single axle weight. 34,000 lbs tandem axle weight.

Single or Multiple Axles.

Trailers with one axle are for smaller boats. Typically, a single-axle trailer can accommodate a boat up to 22' (6.7 m) or 23' (7.01 m) with a maximum weight of 3,300 lbs. (1,369 kg) to 3,500 lbs. (1,587 kg).

So a 3500 lb axle should be maxed out at 2800 lbs. Blowouts are usually a tire issue. Trailer tires can be inferior in quality, they sit for long periods in the sun, they are use infrequently and hard, and the oils in the rubber tend not to flow. They also rot from the inside out, so they look fine from the outside.

One of the other most frequently-used trailers are 6x12 single-axle utility trailers. On average, these weigh around 900 pounds on their own but are capable of carrying around 2,000 pounds.

The simple rule to follow is to place 60% of the weight in front of the axle and 40% behind. It doesn't matter if you're loading a single-axle, double-axle or triple-axle trailer, the 60/40 rule still applies. An unbalanced trailer can lead to trailer sway and other dangers while driving.

A: You must start with the exact length of your boat, measured horizontally from the bow eye to the drain plug. Figure out the beam of your boat. These dimensions will determine the length and width capacity of your trailer.

The weight of your trailer can be figured out by looking at the VIN sticker located on the frame of your trailer. Locate the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) on the sticker. The GVWR is the empty weight of the trailer plus the capacity that the trailer is rated for (also known as the MAX GVCC ).

First, locate the Federal Certification / VIN label on the front half of your trailer. It should be located on the left side. This label will show you your trailer's GVWR and GWAR. Trailers with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less will have a vehicle placard located in the same spot as the VIN label.

In addition to Bridge Formula weight limits, Federal law states that single axles are limited to 20,000 pounds, and axles spaced more than 40 inches and not more than 96 inches apart (tandem axles) are limited to 34,000 pounds.
