Buxton, chairman of the official board. According to Methodist custom, a church building is dedicated to the worship of God only after it is cleared of all indebtedness. A picnic lunch will ba served at noon and all members and friends of the church are invited to share in these activities. The history of the West Highland Church goes back further than the memory of any present member. It began as an interdenominational community church in a cotton mill village.
Both the West End Baptist Church and the First Church of the Nazarene had their beginnings here. The Methodists stayed with the original church and became part of the Alabama Avenue charge. The cornerstone from the old frame building has on it M. E. C.
S. 1897 (Methodist Episcopal Church, South). It was called the Sunset Mill Village Church. A number of prominent people from other churches in jSelma came out to teach Sunday school classes and to help in other ways. Among these were Mrs.

Hobbs, Mrs. P. H. Pitta Miss Miuie Pitts, Mrs. Joe Lamar, Mr.
Walton Greene, Mrs. Rosa Dunklin, Mrs. Frank Hutchins, and Mrs. H. E.
Kendrick. Former pastors of the church included a Rev. Roberta, and Rev. J. L.
Jonas. The work began to grow during the pastorate of Rev. Sam Hudgens. Plans for a new building were started by Rev. A.
L. Martin, and the flrit uhit was completed while Rev. J. R. Helms was the pastor.
The second unit wai built under the leadership of Rev. O. D. Williams. The indebtedness has been paid off, and new pews and church furniture purchased during the ministry of the present pastor, Rev.
C. A. Massey. Future On March 7 at the Sunday morning worship hour. Bishop Kenneth Good son, presiding bishop of the Birmingham area, will officially open the new educational building of the Memorial Methodist Church and consecrate it to the Glory of God.
The service of consecration Will begin at 11 oclock and will be presided over by the pastor, the Rev. Ellis Robert Dickerson, and the district superintendent, the Rev. Warren Lindsey. The building committee, composed of Harold Herrin, chairman, Claude Sherrer, R. V.
Seymore, Robert Luker and Miss Irene Heatherington, together with the contractor, Eugene Rush, will present the keys to the building to the bishop. The bishop will then pronounce, In the name of God and in the presence of this congregation I noyv declare this church to be open for the worship of God and the service of men." The building was designed by Herbert Lancaster, architect, and constructed by Eugene Rush Construction Co. at a cost of $108,000. The loan for the expansion was secured from the Peonies Bank ami Trust Co. The new building, a three story brick structure, provides space for 22 classes, office apace, rest room facilities and increases the capacity of the church sanctuary by SO per cent.
All friends of Memorial Methodist Church who helped make the addition to the building and the work of the church possible are invited to attend the service of consecration and to hear Bishop Goodson deliver the morning sermon. In 1948 Memorial Methodist Church was organized, purchasing a white frame two-story building on North Broad St. from the Robbins estate and using it as a house of worship and as an educational building. In 1956 the chapel was constructed under the combined ministries of the Rev. Raymond Schneider, now pastor of tha Alabama Avenue Methodlat Church, and the Rev.
Henry Eddins, now pastor in Crest-view, Florida. The indebtedness on the chapel was paid off in 1984 under the ministry of the present pastor, the Rev, Mr. Dickerson. Construction on the educational building was begun in March, 1964. The churchs original white frame building will no longer be used by the Sunday School, (but the official board has voted to leave it standing for use by the several Scout troops and other community groups which meet thare.
Officials say they hope in due time to replace the old building with an attractive building for uae by Scouts and for other extrachurch activities. The new educational facilities will provide for a Church School attendance of 400 per ions, and the leadership of the church anticipates that Memorial Methodist Church will continue to be one of Selma's fastest growing churches.
